ConnectViaBooks up for an award!

Man the world cup is playing havoc with me replying to emails, reading blogs, and writing my own! My todo list is so long I’m considering just clearing it out and starting again once the final game of the tournament’s been played.

Anyway, a quick post just to say that ConnectViaBooks is up for an award!

Check the innovation category! Pretty amazing to be nominated with Last.fm and bbc backstage. I always thought ConnectViaBooks was a pretty original idea so it’s quite nice to get some external recognition, even if we don’t win! If nothing else we’ll get a night out and a few drinks! Just getting nominated is worth celebrating as far as I’m concerned.

While mentioning CvB, check out the home page. Slight improvement as you can see a few mug shots of people who’ve already registered! Make you feel like you want to register as well?

ConnectViaBooks Changes

A number of changes have been released for the ConnectViaBooks website this weekend!

Firstly and most importantly the service is now completely free. Previously if you wanted to send anyone a message you needed to be a premium subscriber which cost a few pounds a month. This has now been removed so you can message people for free. Don’t worry though there are measures in place to make sure that other members can’t just spam you willy nilly!

Also you can now link to your blog or website from your CvB profile page. This kinda links in with the premium service above being removed. Obviously if we wanted members to pay we didn’t want to provide them an outside way of contacting each other! With the premium service now gone though there’s no need to stop people describing and pointing to who they are. Blogs and websites are there at the moment, and depending on feedback, we may include other things such as skype or msn messenger user name.

Also a completely new feature called Inside Search. Now you can find people who’ve read books on certain keywords, so if you need usability improving on your website, search for ‘website usability’. Peoples books on their booklist will have the content searched for these terms and if they match, will get returned in the results.

Reading Book Fair

On Sunday I’m off to a book fair. I’m very excited about this as I’m going to be handing out some ConnectViaBook flyers. So far we’ve only been marketing it through word of mouth. It’s been pretty amazing how word has spread across the blogosphere, but this will be the first kind of marketing we are doing off line.

Should be great fun getting out there and telling book lovers about the site.

Can I link to my booklists?

A new way to link to your booklist in ConnectViaBooks. You can use this to put in your email signature or anywhere that doesn’t let you insert javascript code. Heres what I’m currently reading:

Here’s the explanation text taken straight from the site:

Can I link to my booklists?

Yes. If your nickname is "nickname" then you can link to all the books you have read using the url www.connectviabooks.com/nickname

If you have a booklist with the name "booklist" you can link to that specific booklist using the url www.connectviabooks.com/nickname/booklist

If you link to a booklist it will display all books on that booklist (both read and not read).

Suggestions: Create different booklists to show people books you like or what you are currently reading (remember not to check that you have read a book before you actually have read it).

Note: If the name of your booklist contain spaces they must be substituted by a hyphen -. So if your booklist is called "Currently Reading" the link must be Currently-Reading. However you may consider calling such a booklist for "CurrentlyReading" (with no space between the two words)

ConnectViaBooks Forum

We received a lot of feedback from people on how they’d like an open way to discuss books and topics as well as the ‘private’ messaging system we launched with. We planned to introduce some forum type solution anyway, but the feedback made us realise we should make it a top priority!

So today I’m very happy to announce that the forums are there for testing. Go to ConnectViaBooks, log on (or register if you aren’t yet a user), and a Forum button will be at the top of the menu bar. We’re considering this release a Beta, so all feedback gratefully received.

Dot Net Rocks

Woohoo, check out the Dot Net Rocks Show with Rob Howard. Carl mentions that he uses Pocket Blogger, and ConnectViaBooks.

Interestingly you may have difficulty downloading Dot Net Rocks. Since iTunes has been supporting podcasting, and Dot Net Rocks show has their feed on there, their bandwidth has just been eaten up. Are all the podcasters out there ready with sufficient bandwidth if there show gets on iTunes feeds?
